World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is 8/1/2010 - 8/7/2010. I feel that this would be an appropriate time to share my own breastfeeding story with you. Since I have two munchkins, I will post it in two separate posts.

First, though, I would like to share with you some of the benefits of breastfeeding.

The number one benefit in my book of breastfeeding is the antibodies. According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services , breast milk has been linked to lowering the risks of ear infection, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), diabetes, and other illnesses. By breastfeeding, you can help protect your baby and that is awesome!

Breastfeeding is also good for mommy. It has been linked to lowering the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. And, it helps a new mom lose her baby weight ( and sometimes more) after delivery. It only takes 300 extra calories a day to make a baby- but it takes 500 extra calories a day to feed that baby outside of the womb!

Breastfeeding is also cheaper than formula. I'm not going to say free because you have to eat a little more to get your extra calories.

The convenience of breastfeeding can not be beat. It is always ready. No mixing or warming up.

If you want more info on the benefits of breastfeeding, go to U.S Department of Health and Human Services or Kellymom.
